Game Two Answer: George "Mule" Haas was
the last to hit an inside-the-park home run in fall classic play, doing so
in the seventh inning of Game Four for the Philadelphia Athletics, who overcame
an 8-0 deficit to win that day. Taking advantage of a misplayed line drive
by Chicago Cubs center fielder Hack Wilson, Haas circled the bases for a
three-run homer that highlighted a series record 10-run inning (since tied
by the Detroit Tigers in Game Six, 1968). The eight-run deficit remains the
largest overcome in series history. That tremendous comeback allowed Philadelphia
to take a commanding three games-to-one advantage in the series. In Game
Five, Haas came through with another important home run, this time over the
fence and off Cubs starter Pat Malone, tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom
of the ninth. An out later, Al Simmons doubled and then scored the game-winner
on a walk-off double by Bing Miller.
