How was the World Series named?

Dear Guru,

How was the World Series named? I understand that it was named after a guy named World. Please settle this bet.

- Craig Hostland

Guru's Response

Craig,

Sure thing.

The series was not named after someone named World.

The 1884 champion Providence Grays (NL) and the Metropolitan Club of NY (AA) played three games "for the championship of the United States." The winning Grays were acclaimed in the press as "champions of the world," and the World Series was born.
