SPRING WORKLOAD

By Dan Schlossberg

During the days when the Yankees and Cardinals shared spring training headquarters in St. Petersburg, FL, some St. Louis players complained about the twice-daily workouts, as compared with the once-a-day workouts of the World Champion Yankees. Manager Ray Blades responded that the Yankee record should serve as an incentive. "You should want to be like the Yankees and work twice as hard," he insisted. Pepper Martin answered for the dissident players. "I got a jackass back in Oklahoma and you can work him from sunup til sundown and he ain't never gonna to win the Kentucky Derby!"
