You have to be kidding!!!!

   When I was much, much, younger I was always reading about an all Italian baseball team or one comprised of all black players. Never was there an attempt to come up with an all Jewish baseball team (position by position). Whenever I would mention it to my friends I would get, “You have to be kidding…..Jews never played the game…..you can’t have a team that consists of just Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax!).

   Well thanks to recent scholarship we now know about at least 140 Jewish players who have been in the Major Leagues and we can come up with a list involving an all Jewish team:

 

CATCHER: HARRY DANNING, STEVE YEAGER, BRAD AUSMUS, JOE GINSBERG, MIKE LIEBERTHAL

FIRST BASE: HANK GREENBERG, KEVIN YOUKILIS, LOU LIMMER

SECOND BASE: BUDDY MEYER, JOE GORDON

SHORTSTOP: LOU BOUDREAU, ANDY COHEN

THIRD BASE: AL ROSEN

OUTFIELD: SID GORDON, MORRIE ARNOVICH, ELLIOT MADDOX, RYAN BRAUN, SHAUN GREEN

DH: RON BLOMBERG, MIKE EPSTEIN, ART SHAMSKY, JIMMIE REESE

PITCHER: SANDY KOUFAX, STEVE STONE, SAUL ROGOVIN, JOEL HORLEN, ERSKINE MEYER, BARNEY PELTY, KEN HOLTZMAN,

RELIEVER: LARRY SHERRY

   In the years to come, with the aid of more scholarship, hopefully we’ll be able to add to that list.

   As it is the list contains four Hall of Famers:

SANDY KOUFAX, HANK GREENBERG, LOU BOUDREAU, JOE GORDON.

Not bad for such a miniscule list…..not bad at all.
