ONEMOREINNING

    Commissioner kenesaw mountain landis:

A list of all the players he banned from the game.

As the editor and publisher of ONE MORE INNING I have printed several articles of Commissioner Landis and most of them have not been favorable. I wont go over my negative feelings about him but will just briefly say that when it was politically expedient for him to ban players he did so and when it wasn’t, he not only looked the other way but suddenly important and incriminating documents would disappear.

He was also responsible for keeping not only blacks out of the game, but women as well.

For the most part we pretty much know about his role in the BLACK SOX SCANDAL. There were other bans that he was involved in and here they are:

HAL CHASE: 1921: FIXING GAMES.

JOE GEDEON: 1920: CONSPIRING WITH GAMBLERS IN THE BLACK SOX SCANDAL.

BENNY KAUFF: 1919: STOLE A CAR.

LEE MAGEE: 1920: THREW GAMES AND BET ON THEM.

HEINIE GROH: 1921: HAD THE TEMERITY TO HOLD OUT FOR MORE MONEY. LANDIS BANNED HIM FOR LIFE.

RAY FISHER: 1921: REFUSED TO PLAY FOR THE REDS WHEN THEY CUT HIS SALARY. DITTO DICKIE KERR: THEY WERE BOTH BANNED FOR LIFE.

PHIL DOUGLAS: 1922: TRIED TO BRIBE MEMBERS OF HIS TEAM. DITTO JIMMY O’CONNELL WHO LANDIS MADE THE SCAPEGOAT HERE WHEN THE REAL CULPRITS WERE MANGER JOHN MCGRAW AND ROSS BARNES WHO GOT AWAY SCOTT FREE.

PHILLIES OWNER WILLIAM COX: 1943: BET ON HIS TEAMS GAMES.

   AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST:

THE BLACK SOX SCANDAL: 1919: JOE JACKSON BUCK WEAVER, ED CICOTTE, CHICK GANDIL, FRED WILLIAMSON, LEFTY WILLIAMS, SWEDE RISBERG, HAPPY FELSH: BANNED FOR LIFE.

IT’S A PRETTY LONG LIST. IT HOWEVER SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED TY COBB, TRIS SPEAKER, JOHN McGRAW, ROSS BARNES AND MANY OTHER STARS. IF NOTHING ELSE LANDIS KNEW HOW TO PLAY THE POLITICAL GAME AND PLAY IT HE DID!
