MANAGER'S ALL-STARS
By Jim Albright
All successful managers have stars on their teams, because it is those stars who fuel
the success of those teams. Managers sometimes develop the stars, sometimes they get the
most out of those stars, and sometimes they just join with them in creating success. Either
way, the relationship is there. This article tries to identify all the players who could
reasonably be callled stars for more than one season for the most successful managers in
Japanese baseball history.
Managers were selected as among the most successful in Japanese baseball history if they
met one of two criteria:
1) achieved 20 or more success points in the manager's
success point system (see here for details of the
system).
2) are in the Japanese Hall of Fame and
achieved 15 points or more in the manager's success point system.
Players were considered stars if they either:
1) are in the Japanese Hall of Fame and had at least two
seasons for the manager in question which were representative of his overall play. This rule
is necessary for players who predate consistent awards of Best Nines and Sawamuras. It is
also the only rule which has any subjective element.
2) Meets one or more of the following criteria in at least
two seasons playing for the manager in question:
a) Won a Best Nine Award;
b) Won a Sawamura Award;
c) Won a MVP Award;
d) scored at least five points
in the triple crown categories (avg, RBI and HR for hitters; ERA, strikeouts, and wins for
pitchers) calculated on the basis of 4 points for best in the league among qualifying players
in the category, 3 for second best, 2 for third best, and 1 for fourth best, and 0 for
everyone else.
e) Had 20 or more Estimated Win
Shares. For more on the calculation of this, please see
this article.
