The 144 Best Players of the Modern Era
Michael
Hoban, Ph.D.
Why 144?
Well, how many players do you think from the
modern era
of baseball actually posted Hall of Fame numbers during their playing
careers? The answer is 144.
Yes, that is the exact number of players who
have posted
Hall of Fame numbers on the playing field in the modern era according
to the
CAWS CAREER GAUGE. One hundred (102) of
those are position players and forty (42) are pitchers.
I am defining the “modern era” as 1920 to the
present. That would exclude all 19th
century players. It also excludes those
who played in the “deadball era (1901-1919)” such as Ty Cobb and Honus
Wagner.
According to the CCG (as indicated above),
there are
only 102 position players who have posted HOF numbers on the playing
field in
the modern era. (A player must have
played for at least ten full seasons to have a CAWS score.) Here are those players.
