The Yankees were led by Babe Ruth in some of his best years, pitcher Waite Hoyte and an aging but steady Frank "Home Run" Baker. The Giants were led by Hall of famers "The Forham Flash" Frisch, "High Pockets" Kelly and Ross Youngs. There were interesting sub plots as well. "Long Bob" Meusel of the Yankees opposed his brother Irish Meusel of the Giants. And, Casey Stengel, the future hall of fame Yankee manager played outfield for the Giants! 1936 and 1937 - Yankees versus Giants The Yanks and Giants go at it again with revamped teams for two years in a row. This time the Yankees win both series with the one of the most potent batting lineups in baseball history, including: Dickey, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Rolfe, "Joltin' Joe" DiMaggio and "Twinkletoes" Selkirk. Wow! And, hall of fame pitchers Lefty Gomez and Red Ruffing didn't make it any easier. The Giants relied on hall of fame pitcher Carl Hubbell to shut down opponents, while Mel Ott and Travis Jackson provided the run suppport. 1941 - Yankees versus Dodgers The first meeting between the Bronx Bombers and Brooklyn Dodgers was stunning microcosm of the future. The Yanks won their four games by a combined 6 run margin. This series set the stage for Dodger upset and misery for years to come. 1947 - Yankees versus Dodgers Branch Ricky stepped up the competition by adding rookie of the year Jackie Robinson to the Dodgers from the Negro Leagues. He led the team in seven offensive categories. AL MVP Joe DiMaggio and the Yankees were too tough in the World Series. 1949 - Yankees versus Dodgers Roy Campanella and rookie of the year Don Newcombe followed from the Negro Leagues in 1949 and Jackie Robinson won the NL MVP. But, the Yankees continued to dominate. 1951 - Yankees versus Giants The Yankees got increasing pressure from their other cross town rival, as Negro League stars and future hall of famers, Monte Irvin and Willie Mays (rookie of the year ) bolstered the Giants lineup. Meanwhile, the Yankees had drama of their own, Joe Dimaggio played his final season and rookie Mickey Mantle stepped in as his long term replacement in center field. 1952 and 1953 - Back to the Yankees versus Dodgers After three years of being away from the World Series, the Dodgers returned with more fire power than ever. The Dodgers might have had the most talented hitting baseball has ever seen, but they did not have enough pitching to stop the Yankees. 1955 - Yankees versus Dodgers After losing to the Yankees in 1947, '49, '52 and '53, 'dose bums return with better pitching!
