Description of Best Players of the Post War Era (1948-1972)

These are the best players in their best season from this era.

These were baseball's golden years. By integrating players from the Negro Leagues and players returning from World War II into Major League Baseball a statistical harmony (if not a racial harmony) was achieved that makes these years the standard. Perhaps, the ideal balance between strength of pitching and batting occurred from 1948 to 1960.

In 1961 the league expanded. Each time the league adds more players, the number of runs scored increases. This is true, so much so in fact, that in 1961 when the American League expanded the Yankees belted out a whopping 240 homers, including Maris' 61! A slew of sluggers from other AL teams also hit over 40 home runs with high batting averages.

Then the owners were concerned about the increased scoring, in 1963 they agreed to widen the strike zone to the top of the armpit to the bottom of the knee. This gave birth to some incredible pitching performances, led by Sandy Koufax among others.

The top eight players at each position were chosen from each league from 1948 to 1972. That makes 80 infielders, 48 outfielders and 160 pitchers. Draft all-star teams and play the NL versus the AL.

Year, Batting Average and number of Home Runs during best eligible season, whether or not the player was included in the set and reasons why or why not for the boys on the bubble, all by position and league.
