Descripion of Teams for Great World Series Upsets

This set includes what might be the best eight teams ever, except for one thing...they were shocked in the World Series! This card set is stacked with Hall of Famers and great stars from different eras. If they could play it all over again (and you can), maybe they can redeem themselves.

* Expand the tournament to 32 teams! These guys would love to prove themselves against the 16 teams from the charmed "Best Teams Ever" set.

1906 - Chicago Cubs (116-36) upset by Chicago White Sox (93-58)

The Cubs were arguably the best team of all time, winning 116 games in the regular season. The Cub's were lead by their famous hall of fame double play trio of Tinkers (SS) to Evers (2B) to Chance (1B) and unhittable hall of famer Three Finger Brown. The White Sox hall of fame pitcher Big Ed Walsh dominated the world series.

1914 - Philadelphia A's (99-53) upset by Boston Braves (94-59)

George Stalling's "Miracle Braves" led by hall of famers "Crab" Evers, Rabbit Maranville and three obscure pitchers, climbed out of last place midseason by winning 61 of their last 77 games. They won the NL Penant by 10 1/2 games and swept the star-studded and heavily favored A's 4-0.  The A's dominated the AL to win their fourth pennant in five years led by hall of famers Eddie "Cocky" Collins, Frank "Home Run" Baker, Ed Plank, Chief Bender and Herb Pennock.

1919 - Chicago "Black Sox" White Sox (88-52) upset by Cincinnati Reds (96-44)

Replay the infamous Black Sox versus Reds without the fix being on! Could hall of famer Edd Roush lead the Reds to victory in a rematch? White Sox hall of famers "Cocky" Collins, "Shoeless Joe" Jackson and Eddie "Knuckles" Cicotte want another try.

1934 - Detroit Tigers (101-53) upset by St. Louis "Gas House Gang" Cardinals (95-58)

The Dean brothers sure made a case for great pitching beating great hitting. Dizzy Dean won 30 games and rookie brother Paul "Daffy" Dean won 19. Despite the Tiger hall of fame lineup of "Black Mike" Cochrane, "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg, "Mechanical Man' Gehringer and Goose Goslin, the Cardinals managed an upset. To be fair, the Cards had great hitting too including hall of famers "The Fordham Flash" Frisch and "Ducky" Medwick and phenomenal single season performance by Ripper Collins.

1954 - Cleveland Indians (111-43) upset by New York Giants (97-57)

The star studded Indians include an astounding four hall of fame pitchers "Rapid Robert" Feller, Bob Lemon, Early Wynn, and Hal "The Prince" Newhouser and lead the league in era by a ton. The Indians had great bats too, including Larry Doby and Al Rosen. But, the Giants Willie "Say-Hey" Mays, Monte Irvin, Al Dark and Hoyt Wilhelm got the better of them.

1969 - Baltimore Orioles (109-53) upset by New York "Miracle" Mets (100-62)

It was truely a miracle year for the Mets. They upset one of the great teams of all time and dynasty of the early 1970's. Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan emerged as budding superstars for the Mets. Hall of famers Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson and Jim Palmer would lead the Orioles victorious return to the world series the next year.

1982 - Milwaukee Brewers (95-67) upset by St. Louis Cardinals (92-70)

The incredible power hitting lineup of the Brewers amassed 216 home runs, but those speedy Cardinals got the better of them in a tense seven game series. Brewers highlights include hall of famers Paul Moiltor, Robin Yount and Rollie Fingers. Cardinal highlights include future hall of famers Ozzie Smith and Bruce Sutter.

1990 - Oakland A's (103-59) upset by Cincinnati Reds (91-71)

Choke!  This A'steam might have been better than the 1988 team because of Rickey Henderson, but they lost their world series in a stunning upset. McGwire, Eckersley, Canseco, "Smoke" Stewart, Welch all had outstanding seasons. Reds upset was led by future hall of famer Barry Larkin and great single season performances from Eric Davis, Randy "K" Myers and Rob Dibble.
